HARARE| MASIMBA NEWS / Award-winning journalist Hopewell Chin’ono has called on Zimbabweans to show their support for Advocate Fadzayi Mahere as she faces trial at the High Court on Monday. Mahere, a prominent politician, lawyer and spokesperson for the main opposition CCC, has been charged using a law that does not exist.

Chin’ono, who has been a vocal critic of the Zimbabwean government, took to Twitter to rally support for Mahere. “Fadzayi Mahere belongs to a trio of the most hated opposition leaders by the regime of Tendai Biti and Job Sikhala. Go to court & support her tomorrow,” he wrote.

Mahere herself also took to Twitter, announcing that she would be appearing before the Anti-Corruption Court in a case where she is on trial for tweeting against police brutality. The proceedings have taken over 2 years, with judgment set to be handed down at 9am on 5 April.

Many Zimbabweans have expressed concern over the government’s crackdown on opposition figures and journalists, with Chin’ono himself being arrested and detained several times in recent years. The call to support Mahere at her court hearing is seen as a show of solidarity with those who are fighting for democracy and freedom of expression in Zimbabwe.

As of now, it is unclear how the court will rule in Mahere’s case. However, the support shown by Chin’ono and others is a reminder that the fight for justice and human rights in Zimbabwe is far from over.
