HARARE , George Charamba, the notorious spokesperson for Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangwagwa, recently stirred controversy on social media after referring to Nelson Chamisa, the President of the opposition party Citizens Coalition For Change (CCC), as a “dodo”. Charamba’s tweet included a cartoon of a dodo bird with Chamisa’s head.
“A dodo will always be one. No amount of cosmetic donor trinkets can change that, and Zimbabwe will never allow herself to be governed by a dodo. Muchasvinura!” Charamba’s tweet read.
The tweet quickly drew backlash from critics who accused Charamba of using derogatory language to insult Chamisa. Some social media users also questioned the appropriateness of a government spokesperson using such language to refer to an opposition leader.
In response to Charamba’s tweet, a user named “Behold The New” wrote: “Woman killer, PSMAS funds thief, go and vomit your rubbish to GoldMafia king Dambudzo Mnangagwa and wife Auxillia Marujata Mnangagwa. Zimbabwe shall be free from ZANUPF cancer. The people shall govern not thieves like you. Duzvi.”
Chamisa himself has not publicly responded to Charamba’s tweet, but some of his supporters have called for an apology from the government spokesperson.
The incident has once again highlighted the deep political divisions and tensions in Zimbabwe, which has been grappling with economic and social challenges for years. Despite Mnangwagwa’s promises of reform, critics say that the government has not done enough to address issues such as corruption, human rights abuses, and a lack of democratic freedoms.
As of now, it remains to be seen whether Charamba will issue an apology or face any consequences for his tweet.
