JOHANNESBURG, South African police have reminded foreigners to carry their passports with them at all times or risk being arrested and detained. The warning comes after more than 50 undocumented foreigners were arrested during a roadblock as part of “Operation Okae Moloa” in Fourways, Johannesburg. The arrests included a doctor from Iran who was arrested for failing to produce his passport. SAPS Maj-Gen Mbuso Khumalo said Fourways had been identified as a crime hotspot and that foreigners who knew they did not belong in the country must carry their passports with them to avoid arrest. Home affairs minister Aaron Motsoaledi gave SAPS the green light to spot check foreigners last year to ascertain whether they were legally in the country. Documents are checked against the national population register.
