HARARE , Tapiwa Mashakada, a senior leader of the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC) has made a statement regarding the ongoing confusion surrounding the party’s current state. Mashakada has clarified that all candidates who filed nominations under the MDC Alliance before renouncing their membership, still belong to the MDC Alliance in accordance with the law, until the Congress of the new party, the Chamisa-led Coalition for Change (CCC), is held.
This announcement is likely to have a significant impact on the ongoing political situation in Zimbabwe, where the MDC has been struggling to maintain its position as the main opposition party in the country. The MDC has faced numerous challenges in recent months, including accusations of being a puppet of the ruling Zanu-PF party, and the defection of a significant number of its members to the CCC.
Meanwhile, MDC leader Douglas Mwonzora continues to face difficulties in gaining support from the party’s remaining members. The majority of MDC supporters have left for the CCC, which is seen as a more viable alternative to the Mwonzora-led faction. As the political landscape in Zimbabwe continues to shift, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the MDC and its various factions.
