HARARE , George Charamba, the notorious spokesman for Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa, has sparked outrage after he tweeted about the demise of the United Nations and the rise of the BRICS countries. In a series of tweets, Charamba expressed his opinion that the US was seeking to destroy the UN and that the BRICS nations would soon take over.
“Behold the death of the @UN, enter BRICS,” Charamba tweeted. “The US is seeking to destroy the UN, and the BRICS nations will soon take over.”
Charamba’s tweet has drawn widespread condemnation, with many accusing him of promoting conspiracy theories and undermining the UN’s efforts to promote peace and stability around the world.
“The United Nations is an essential organization that has done much good in the world,” said one commentator. “It is unacceptable for anyone, let alone a spokesperson for a national leader, to promote the idea that it should be destroyed.”
Charamba also tweeted about a recent Executive Order signed by US President Joe Biden, which he claimed was designed to cripple the UN.
“Within the Executive Order, US President clearly stated that regardless of the subject matter before the Security Council, even if it is in the interests of the US, the Ambassador (or Deputy Ambassador ) are to veto it,” Charamba tweeted. “The simple idea is to make it so that the U.N.’s primary decision-making body will be completely paralyzed and cannot accomplish anything, even fund itself.”
Charamba’s tweets have been widely criticized for their inaccuracies and misleading claims. The Executive Order signed by President Biden does not seek to paralyze the UN or prevent it from functioning. Instead, it seeks to hold accountable those responsible for human rights abuses and corruption around the world.
The United Nations has been a critical institution in promoting global peace and security since its founding in 1945. Despite the challenges it faces, including ongoing conflicts and funding shortfalls, the UN remains a vital organization that is working to improve the lives of people around the world.
Charamba’s tweets are a reminder of the importance of responsible communication and the need for leaders to support the UN’s efforts to promote peace and stability around the world.
