KWEKWE , Two members of President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s escort team were killed and two others seriously injured in a road accident on Saturday, April 22. The incident occurred about 15km from Kwekwe along the Harare-Bulawayo Highway at around 2pm when the vehicle they were travelling in, a Toyota Prado, rammed into a stationary haulage truck. According to reports, the driver of the Prado, Edmore Nyamadzawo Chingwaro (37), fell asleep behind the wheel, causing the vehicle to veer off the road. Chingwaro and Sorobhi Chirima (46) were identified as the deceased, while the two injured passengers, Zvidzai Gava (43) and Tasiyana Makanganwa (40), were airlifted to Harare for further treatment after receiving initial treatment at Kwekwe General Hospital.

Mnangagwa has a farm in Sherwood outside Kwekwe, where he usually spends weekends. The four people in the Prado were believed to be part of the advance Presidential escort team. The accident comes two years after an executive escort motorbike outrider from the Zimbabwe Republic Police died on the spot after being involved in a head-on collision with a Toyota Altezza, and exactly one year after one of Auxilia Mnangagwa’s aides died and three others were injured after a vehicle in her convoy overturned near Muzarabani in Mashonaland Central province.

Zimbabwe has been recording a spate of fatal road accidents that are mainly blamed on human error, poorly maintained vehicles, and roads. National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed the accident but said that further details would be released in due course. In a separate incident, Nyathi also confirmed that one person died and two others were injured when a Nissan UD truck veered off the road and overturned before landing on its wheels at the 6km peg along Chirape-Masemo Road in Gokwe at the weekend.
