JOHANNESBURG, Two fugitives, Thabo Bester and Nandipha Magudumana, who were on the run since Bester’s escape from the Mangaung correctional facility last year, have been caught in Tanzania and have been brought back to South Africa. The two were caught last Friday, and a South African delegation had travelled to Tanzania to secure their transfer back to the country.

The two arrived back in the country on Thursday morning, with a flight touching down at Lanseria Airport at around 4 am. A police van was seen moving from the plane, indicating the arrival of the two fugitives. A media conference has been planned for 8 am, where Justice Minister Ronald Lamola and his police counterpart, Bheki Cele, are expected to provide more details on the arrest and extradition of the fugitives.

Thabo Bester had made a daring escape from the Mangaung correctional facility last year, sparking a massive manhunt for him and his accomplice, Doctor Nandipha Magudumana. The two had been on the run ever since, evading the authorities and law enforcement agencies until their capture in Tanzania last week.

The details of their capture and extradition back to South Africa are still unclear, and it is expected that the media conference scheduled for later in the day will provide more information on the matter. The return of the fugitives to South Africa will likely be seen as a victory for the authorities, who had been pursuing the two for a long time.

The incident highlights the challenges faced by law enforcement agencies in apprehending fugitives who flee the country, especially in cases where they cross international borders. The South African authorities will likely use this incident to reassess their extradition and international cooperation agreements to ensure that they are better equipped to deal with such situations in the future.
